Privacy Policy

This policy explains what information Yapgirl collects, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

Yapgirl LLC ("Yapgirl," "we," "us," or "our") operates the Yapgirl mobile application and related iMessage extension (collectively, the "Service"). This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and the choices you have.

By using the Service, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

1. Who We Are

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Information you provide

  • Account information - your name, phone number, and Apple user identifier (when you Sign in with Apple)
  • Profile information - your display name and avatar if you upload one for your own Yapgirl profile
  • Yaps - audio recordings you create and send to friends, including related file metadata such as filename, duration, sender, recipient/profile, and timestamp
  • Selected friend information - the name and phone number of each friend you choose to add, plus profile details such as profile status, avatar color, yap counts, last yap timestamp, and friendship start year if you provide one
  • Generated yap data - transcripts, waveform data, tags, facts, quotes, events, reminders, profile summaries, prep sheets, and other insights generated from yaps
  • Reports and moderation information - reports you submit about objectionable yaps or abusive users, including the report reason, the reported user, the referenced yap if applicable, and a transcript snippet when available
  • AI processing consent - whether and when you accepted the current AI processing consent version

2.2 Information we collect automatically

  • Push notification and Live Activity tokens - generated by Apple, Expo, or related platform services to deliver notifications and Live Activities to your device
  • Technical logs - information automatically generated when the Service is used, such as IP address, request timestamps, server logs, and error reports

Yapgirl does not currently use a third-party analytics or crash reporting SDK to track feature usage. Device and app details may be displayed locally in Yapgirl for troubleshooting.

2.3 Information from your device (with permission)

  • Microphone - only when you actively record a yap. We do not record passively or in the background.
  • Contacts - only if you grant permission. We read contacts on your device to help you choose friends. We do not upload your full address book or contact photos. Contact photos may be read locally so selected friends can be displayed in Yapgirl, but they are not uploaded to our servers. If you select a friend, we store that friend's name and phone number to create their profile, check whether they are already a Yapgirl user, and route yaps.
  • Notifications - to deliver alerts when friends send you yaps.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Provide, maintain, and improve the Service
  • Authenticate you, verify your phone number, and secure your account
  • Deliver yaps to the friends you choose
  • Create and manage friend profiles, reminders, events, summaries, and prep sheets
  • Transcribe yaps to text (see Section 4)
  • Extract conversational insights such as topics, tags, mentioned events, quotes, reminders, summaries, and prep-sheet notes (see Section 4)
  • Record and enforce your AI processing consent before yaps are processed by AI services
  • Send push notifications and Live Activities about activity in your account
  • Review reports, enforce our Terms, block abusive users, and remove objectionable content
  • Respond to support requests
  • Detect, prevent, and address technical issues, fraud, and abuse
  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell your personal information. We do not use your yaps or transcripts to serve advertising.

4. AI Processing of Yaps

Yapgirl uses third-party artificial intelligence services to process your yaps. Specifically:

  • OpenAI (Whisper API) - for speech-to-text transcription of yap audio
  • AI model providers accessed via Vercel AI Gateway (including OpenAI and Anthropic) - for processing transcripts and related yap context, such as the friend or profile name, current date and timezone, recent yap transcripts, previous summaries, existing tags, extracted facts, and quotes, to generate tags, events, reminders, summaries, prep-sheet questions, and other conversational insights

When you send a yap, the audio file may be transmitted to OpenAI for transcription. The resulting transcript and related yap context, such as the friend or profile name, current date and timezone, recent yap transcripts, previous summaries, existing tags, extracted facts, and quotes, may be transmitted through Vercel AI Gateway to AI model providers, including OpenAI and Anthropic, for the processing described above. These providers have committed via their API terms not to use API data to train their models. We have data processing agreements in place where applicable.

You may delete a yap at any time. When you delete a yap, we delete its associated transcript and extracted insights from our systems within 30 days.

5. How We Share Information

We share information only in the following circumstances:

  • With friends you choose - yaps and their transcripts are shared with the specific recipients you select.
  • With service providers (sub-processors) that help us operate the Service, including:
    • Cloud database, file storage, and server function providers (for account data, selected friend names and phone numbers, yap files, transcripts, AI consent records, moderation reports, generated insights, events, reminders, summaries, and prep sheets)
    • AI providers for transcription, summary generation, prep-sheet generation, reminders, and conversational insight extraction (described in Section 4 above)
    • SMS providers for sending and checking phone number verification codes
    • Push notification and Live Activity platform providers, including Apple Push Notification service (APNs), Expo, and Voltra
    • App build, distribution, and update providers
  • For legal reasons - if we believe disclosure is required by law, court order, or to protect rights, safety, or property.
  • In a business transfer - if Yapgirl is acquired, merged, or sells substantially all of its assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you of any such change.

We require service providers that process personal data for us, including AI providers, to use that data only to provide services to Yapgirl, protect it with privacy and security safeguards, and provide the same or equal protection of user data as described in this Privacy Policy and required by applicable App Store guidelines.

We maintain a current list of our sub-processors and the specific data each one receives. You can request this list at any time by emailing support@yapgirl.com.

6. Data Retention

We retain your information for as long as your account is active. When you delete your account:

  • Your account is marked for deletion and your profile data is immediately removed from public view.
  • Your personal data (name, phone number, Apple user ID, push notification and Live Activity tokens, avatar, and AI consent record) is permanently deleted within 30 days.
  • Profiles, yaps you received, transcripts, moderation reports, tags, events, reminders, summaries, prep sheets, and related generated data tied to your account are deleted when your account is purged after the deletion grace period.
  • Yaps you sent to friends remain in those friends' accounts, since they are the recipients of that content.
  • Aggregated, de-identified operational data may be retained after it can no longer identify you.

Some data may be retained longer if required by law or for legitimate business purposes such as fraud prevention.

7. Your Rights and Choices

7.1 Access and deletion

You can delete your account at any time from within Yapgirl: Settings -> Delete Account. This triggers the deletion process described in Section 6.

You may also request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information by emailing support@yapgirl.com. We will respond within 30 days.

7.2 Data portability

You may request a copy of your personal data in a portable format by emailing support@yapgirl.com.

7.3 Push notifications

You can disable push notifications at any time in your device's Settings -> Notifications -> Yapgirl.

7.4 Contacts access

You can revoke contacts permission at any time in your device's Settings -> Yapgirl -> Contacts.

7.5 California residents (CCPA / CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to:

  • Know what personal information we collect, use, and disclose
  • Delete personal information we have collected
  • Correct inaccurate personal information
  • Opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information (we do not sell or share your personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising)
  • Limit the use of sensitive personal information
  • Non-discrimination for exercising your rights

7.6 European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland residents (GDPR)

If you are in the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, you have the right to:

  • Access your personal data
  • Rectify inaccurate data
  • Erase your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Restrict or object to processing
  • Data portability
  • Withdraw consent at any time (where processing is based on consent)
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

The legal basis for our processing is: (i) performance of our contract with you, (ii) your consent (for AI processing and contacts access), and (iii) our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Service.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at support@yapgirl.com and we will delete it.

9. International Data Transfers

Yapgirl is based in the United States. If you use the Service from outside the United States, your information will be transferred to and processed in the United States and other countries where our service providers operate. By using the Service, you consent to this transfer.

For transfers from the EEA, UK, or Switzerland, we rely on standard contractual clauses or other lawful transfer mechanisms.

10. Security

We implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit (TLS) and at rest, access controls, and regular security reviews. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the Service or by other reasonable means and update the "Last updated" date above. Your continued use of the Service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
